INSTRUCTOR PROFILES

 

Rick Drake, MS, PE, SE, SECB (Seismic)

Mr. Drake has over 36 years of experience in the design and construction of industrial, commercial, telecom, and nuclear fuel cycle facilities. During this time, he has designed structures of carbon steel, reinforced concrete, stainless steel, masonry and timber materials. He has also been actively involved in the seismic analysis, design and retrofit of commercial and industrial structures, commercial and industrial equipment, and nonstructural facility components. He has extensive structural and seismic investigation experience including evaluation of existing structural integrity; identification of structural deterioration and/or damage; determination of the causes of structural problems; estimated seismic risk, and preparing and plans for retrofit and/or repair of facilities.  He currently is a member of the committees that publish ASCE 7 and the AISC Seismic Provisions. He currently is a Senior Fellow in Structural Engineering at Fluor Corporation and teaches both graduate and undergraduate Civil Engineering design courses at California Polytechnic University, Pomona, California.

 

Selena M. Forman, Ph.D, PE (Hydrology and Hydraulics)

Selena M. Forman is a senior project manager with a southern California engineering firm specializing in hydrology, hydraulics, scour analysis, and channel design.  She has 15 years of experience in the teaching, research, and professional realms of civil and environmental engineering.  She has conducted numerous studies involving sediment transport modeling, scour analysis and design, stable channel design, and river restoration, including projects addressing the impacts of instream and floodplain mining activities on channel stability.  Dr. Forman has been a professor at San Diego State University where she taught courses in hydraulics and river engineering.  She has also short courses throughout the U.S. in HEC-RAS and HEC 6, as well as the hydrology and hydraulic portions of PE exam review courses for the University of California San Diego and private organizations.

 

Daniel E. Mitchell, MS, PE, TE, PTOE (Traffic and Transportation)

Daniel is a Transportation Engineer for the City of Los Angeles DOT, and currently leads the City's ATSAC traffic management center.  He is responsible for the daily operation of nearly 3,000 traffic signals, including managing traffic during emergencies and special events.  Dan has taught the transportation topic for the Civil P.E. exam since 2001.  His educational background includes earning a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from Loyola Marymount University and a Master's Degree in Transportation Systems from U.C. Irvine. Dan is a licensed Civil and Traffic Engineer, as well as a certified Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE).

 

John Lohman, MS, PE, RGE  (Geotechnical)

Mr. Lohman has over 20 years of geotechnical engineering experience in California and throughout the United States.  He is currently Vice President and Principal of Kleinfelder, Inc.  He has earned a B.S.C.E. (Civil Engineering) and an M.S.C.E. (Geotechnical Engineering). He also teaches Geotechnical Engineering at California State University, Pomona.  Mr. Lohman is a Registered Civil Engineer and a Registered Geotechnical Engineer.  To add to this, he is Chairman of the Geotechnical Engineer Exam Writing Committee for the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.

 

Siva K. Sivathasan, PhD, PE, GE (Surveying)

Dr. Sivathasan is a registered Civil and Geotechnical Engineer in California. He is experienced in various projects that have included bridges, schools, hospitals, water tanks/reservoirs, residential and commercial developments.  He also has prepared complex and comprehensive surveying and geotechnical reports with detailed recommendations. Currently, he is working as an Associate Engineer with Leighton Group at Rancho Cucamonga, California. He also teaches Engineering Surveying, Soil Mechanics and other Design Classes at University of California, Irvine (UCI).

 

Lisa Wang, PhD, PE (Structural Review I: Structural Analysis and Concrete Design)

Dr. Wang is a full time professor in the Civil Engineering Department at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Before she joined Cal Poly in 1999, she was with an engineering consulting firm Boyle Engineering Corporation in Newport Beach. Dr. Wang received her Ph.D. in Structural and Earthquake Engineering from the University of California, Irvine, her M.S. in Geotechnical Engineering from China Academy of Railway Sciences, and her B.S. in Civil Engineering from Southwest Jiaotong University. Dr. Wang teaches classes at undergraduate and graduate levels in Structural Engineering, and she is the graduate coordinator for the Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE) program at Cal Poly Pomona. Her professional interests are in the research of liquid-structure interaction on liquid storage structures, state-of-the-art seismic design approaches of structures with seismic protective systems, and the design of buildings and bridges for earthquake loading.

 

Don Phillippi, MS, PE, SE (Structural Review II: Steel, Masonry, and Timber Design)

Mr. Phillippi is a registered Structural Engineer in California. He and is a member of several professional organizations including American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California (SEAOSC), American Concrete Institute (ACI), and American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) .  Mr. Phillippi earned his BS (in civil engineering), and MS (in structural engineering) from California State Polytechnic University in Pomona.  He has designed numerous industrial buildings, commercial buildings and residential buildings throughout California.  Don has frequently taught Structural review courses for the PE Civil Exam of the past few years.  He has been the owner of Diamond Pacific Structural Engineering Services in Rancho Cucamonga since 1989.   

 

Badri Badriyha, PhD, PE (Environmental)

Dr. Badriyha is registered Civil Engineer in California and a registered Environmental Engineer in Arizona. His educational background includes a BS degree in Civil Engineering, a Master and PhD degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Southern California. He has over twenty years of experience in the environmental engineering field including designing water and wastewater facilities, degradation of recalcitrant pollutants, drinking water quality, air pollution control, advanced oxidation processes, environmental analysis, and modeling of physiochemical treatment processes. He has been a faculty with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at San Diego State University. He has often taught the water, wastewater, and environmental sections of the PE Civil License Review.  Currently, he works with HDR, Inc. as a Senior Wastewater Engineer

 

Lawrence (Larry) T. Sherry, MS, PE, CCM (Construction)

Mr. Sherry has over 30 years experience in project management and construction management for a wide range of capital improvement projects.  The facilities range from commercial buildings to oil and chemical processing facilities to offshore oil production platforms and pipelines to water and wastewater pipelines, pump stations and treatment facilities.  Mr. Sherry earned a BS in Engineering at San Diego State University and a MS in Engineering Management from the University of Missouri. He is a licensed California Civil Engineer and a Certified Construction Manager.
